What Do Bartenders Wear?

Bartenders are the people who make bars what they are — places to socialize, drink, and relax after a long day. They keep the drinks flowing and make sure everyone has a good time.

And so the bartender uniform has to be versatile. They need to be able to move around easily, handle liquor bottles and glasses, and look good doing it.

Nevertheless, it’s necessary for bartenders to look professional at all times.

At Stock., we know the ins and outs of a great bartender uniform. We have worked with bartenders and bar owners to create uniforms that speak to the brand of the bar. Whether it's a small speakeasy or a large nightclub, we can help you design the perfect uniform for your bartenders.

The Modern Bartender: A Lesson in Professional Style

Professional bartenders do more than simply make drinks — they engage with customers, manage challenging circumstances, and work extended periods of time without a break. All of which necessitates a certain amount of savoir-faire.

A good rule of thumb: Bartenders should wear clothes that they feel good in and that allow them to move around easily. Here are a few key elements of a great bartender uniform:

  • A clean and well-fitting shirt or blouse
  • Comfortable pants or skirts that allow for easy movement
  • Functional

Below we break down how you can help your bartenders dress for success:

Choose a Uniform That is Both Stylish and Functional

For example, a shirt with dark jeans or chinos would be appropriate for most bars.

A classic collared shirt is always a good choice. Collared shirts have been part of the professional dress code for many years, and they are a classic element of any great bartender uniform. Collars are equivalent to a great handshake — they establish an initial impression of professionalism.

Collared shirts can be dressed up or down, depending on the rest of the outfit. These options tend to look more professional than a t-shirt. When paired with smart black trousers or black pants, it gives off a more sophisticated vibe.

On the other hand, if you want your bartenders to look more relaxed, you could opt for a button-down shirt with sleeves rolled up.

Our personal favorite is the banded collar shirt. It's a great way to add a touch of style that is both unique and practical. The banded collar shirt is also known as the "grandad shirt" or the "Nehru shirt." It has a small stand-up collar that sits close to the neck and does not have a lapel. This style of shirt is comfortable and easy to move in — perfect for bartenders.

Make Sure Your Bartenders Have the Right Shoes

Bartenders are on their feet for long periods of time, so they need to wear comfortable shoes that offer support. Slip-resistant shoes are also a good idea—bars can get quite wet and slippery!

Closed-toe shoes are usually a must unless your bar has a specific dress code that allows for open-toe shoes. Usually, these bars have a tropical or beach theme. However, it's still best to err on the side of caution and go with closed-toe shoes.

In terms of color, black shoes are always a good choice. It goes with everything and it doesn't show dirt as easily as lighter colors. Beyond that, you can let your bartenders choose shoes that fit their personal style. Just make sure they are clean and presentable.

Encourage Your Bartenders to Accessorize

Or you can help them accessorize, if you prefer. A well-chosen accessory can take an outfit from ordinary to extraordinary.

You can incorporate accessories into your uniform program. Some bars provide their bartenders with suspenders or bow ties. This uniform we worked on with The Soho House is one of our favorite examples. The corduroy bow tie and double-breasted vests add personality to the otherwise classic uniform.

More relaxed establishments such as breweries, may consider allowing their bartenders to wear hats. Accessories are a great way to add some personality to the uniform and make your bartenders stand out.

Similar outfits allow for easy identification amongst guests and also help to unify the staff. However, you don't want your bartenders to look like they're in a costume. A few well-chosen accessories can help to strike the right balance.

Plan For the Unexpected

Bartenders are dealing with liquids, so spills are inevitable. You also have to factor in the occasional broken glass. It's important to have a bartender uniform that can withstand these accidents.

Choose uniforms that can withstand a little wear and tear.

Dark colors tend to hide stains better than light colors. And fabrics like denim and canvas are more durable than delicate materials like silk or linen.

Top-quality aprons are also a good investment. Not only do they protect your bartenders’ clothes from spills and splashes, but they can also add a professional touch to their look. And you can also make them more functional. Pockets in aprons are handy for storing things like pens, note pads, and handheld scanners.
